Fluctuating weather linked to you feeling under the weather

Posted: Updated:

Tyler (KYTX) -- Along with these up and down temperatures, we're seeing runny noses, sore throats, and people just under the weather. Turns out the weather has something to do with it.

"It was all in my chest. I mean to the point of I lost my voice for a couple days, I couldn't really talk. I had a horrible cough," Kevin Meyer, who has felt sick a few weeks, said.

It hits Meyer every spring.

"Always when the weather changes, I get this," Meyer said.

He says he has a history of pollen affecting him. After having mucus build up over a few weeks and feeling fatigued, he went to his doctor.

"He goes I think it's an allergy, or it's just a cold," Meyer said.

And knowing the difference can be tough since doctors say symptoms are almost identical.

"A lot of the sinus tenderness, runny nose, watery eyes, and sore throats," Dr. Brent Wadle, a family physician at Trinity Mother Frances Clinic in Tyler, said.

Doctors say allergies usually last longer, while a cold will run its course in 5 to 6 days.

"The cold is going to be a virus and you may get a little bit of achiness with it. Allergies aren't going to cause any of that," Wadle said.

Either way, Wadle recommends starting with an antihistamine or over-the-counter medication to get congestion loose.

Since Meyer's symptoms persisted, he received a shot and cough syrup.

"I'm still not 100 percent, and we're already at the end of February," Meyer said.

He hopes to get back to normal once this roller coaster weather comes to a halt.
