Battling eating disorders: A Tyler woman's story

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) -  This weekend kicks off National Eating Disorder Awareness Week. It's a week we turn our attention to those around us struggling with these disorders, and those who are recovering from them.

A brave Tyler woman shares her personal story to spread hope to others.

"I always grew up as a chubby kid, I was overweight, and you get teased in school," 20-year-old Karsyn Hobbs says.

That's part of what spurred the eating she says she's had for most of her life.

"I basically did anything. Diet pills, I over-exercised, I under-ate, I used laxatives."

She says it all spiraled out of control about two years ago around her 18th birthday.

"It probably turned into a full blown eating disorder, like dangerous to my health, could have killed me, I could have died, for a whole year. I lost 140 pounds. I was like 100 pounds, and I'm 5'6''."

Anxiety is what brought Karsyn to a doctor, who confronted her about her extreme weight loss, and had her start therapy.

"I went to psychotherapy, and I started seeing my dietitian, Sara Upson of My Signature Nutrition, and I started going to a free group meeting every Thursday night at 7," she says.

My Signature Nutrition is a local program that helped Karsyn re-establish healthy eating patterns.

For example, during the peak of her eating disorder, Karsyn wouldn't even dream of eating cheese. Now, she has three different kinds of cheese in her fridge.

Now, Karsyn pours her newfound positive attitude into a blog, where she openly talks about overcoming her eating disorder, and helps other girls do the same.

"By admitting you have an issue you feel like you're admitting that you're crazy or that there's something wrong with you. But the thing is you don't wake up and feel like a different person, you finally wake up and feel like yourself," she says with a smile.

She wants others to realize you're not alone and that if you want it, change is right around the corner.

Sara Upson is the dietitian who runs My Signature Nutrition, and leads free group therapy sessions each week.

She has helped Karsyn and many others get back on their feet, and can do the same for you. If you want to learn more about her program, click here.
