Raccoons and possums active in East Texas

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) -  The unseasonably warm temperatures we had last week made wildlife much more active, especially possums and raccoons.  Animal Control workers in Tyler say they've been catching up to six per day.

Possums aren't always the friendliest of creatures.

"See his teeth?"

Especially when they're locked up in a cage. But, don't worry, they will all have new homes soon. And, Bob Gardner with Animal Control, says it won't be in someone's backyard in the city anymore.

"As long as they're healthy, we're going to release them right back into the wild and let them have a good, normal life."

He says Texas Parks and Wildlife has designated rural areas for animals like this to be released.

"We set traps all the time, except when it's really, really cold or when it's really, really hot." says Mary Fowler, senior field training officer for Animal Control.

She says oftentimes, these animals are just looking for food.

"People tend to leave cat food, dog food outside. And, they'll go find it- or, birdseed. That's what raccoons are notorious for is getting into bird feeders."

"This is Rocky. Yeah, Rocky Raccoon. Rocky's got a little bit of an attitude."

Rocky is another healthy animal that became a bother.

"They should not be out in the daytime." says Gardner. "And, if they're becoming a nuisance, if they're getting in your trash, or if they're aggravating your pets or something, we need a call."

Gardner says you should never try to handle wildlife yourself or try to make pets out of them because not only is it dangerous, it's also illegal.
