SHREVEPORT, La. (KTBS) - A Shreveport mother who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the beating death of her 1 year-old daughter was sentenced to 30 years.

The sentencing for Alasaundria Avery came down Tuesday afternoon in Judge Katherine Dorroh's courtroom.

Sentencing for Avery was continued last Thursday after Judge Dorroh heard several testimonies related to the case.

Avery's Defense Attorney, Jason Waltman, tells KTBS 3 News that he was hopeful for a lesser sentence after testimonies were heard last week. For this particular case, the least amount of years Avery could have gotten was 10 years and the max was 40 years.

Waltman explained some of Avery's history saying she was "abandoned as a small child and was sexually abused by her brother." He went on to say that Avery gave excellent care to little Denise for the first 8 months of the child's life up until moving into the Metal Street residence where the beating death occurred. Waltman says Avery had a difficult time overcoming her past that unfortunately lead to the death of her daughter.

As part of Avery's plea deal, she agreed to testify against others who may have been involved in the death of little Denise however, Waltman says that the District Attorney's Office has yet to pursue or file charges against anyone else in the case.
