FRESH 15 Grocery Grab: Where the money goes

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - It's grocery shopping for a good cause! The first ever FRESH 15 Grocery Grab took place Wednesday morning.

The goal was to collect the most money in groceries in one minute. Teammates CBS19's Jeff Schaffer and the Tyler Paper's Christine Gardner took home second place! All of the money in groceries benefits the American Heart Association and Bethesda Health Clinic in Tyler.

Rosa Ramirez has been a patient at Bethesda for two years. She's diabetic and says the disease has taken a toll on her whole family.

"I lost my mother, my father, my older sister and my younger brother to diabetes. "

But now, she says she's getting some help.

"Health-wise and also spiritual-wise."

She says the people at Bethesda have been a real blessing in her life.

"I'm just thankful to all the people who are here because they're good people. They're very nice."

Medical director Dr. John English says he wouldn't be able to help people like Ramirez and much of the adult, uninsured population without community support. That's why he says this grocery grab is so important.

"We're just excited to be able to take some of the funds they're going to generate and the excitement of that as well."

He says all the proceeds will go back into the clinic for medical and dental care. Funding also helps expand nutrition education programs.

"Oh, it's huge, yeah. This is going to be great."

"It means a lot, really." says Ramirez.

The teams collected a total of $1,523.80 for these two organizations.

Half of the money will go to the Bethesda Health Clinic. The other half goes to the American Heart Association. It is the nation's largest and oldest voluntary organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke.
