We live in the South, so some of us may have a Southern accent, but would you consider saying "goodbye" to "howdy, y'all"?
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee was going to offer a speech class for its workers next month to do just that, until it got canceled.

Tyler (KYTX) -- It's a vision that's getting clearer-- but will need help from the community to become a reality.

Right now the Lindsey building at Elm and Broadway in Tyler sits vacant, but its future looks bright.

"I'd like to see it come to fruition," Don Warren, Co-Chairman of the Tyler Arts Center Task Force, said.

That committee formed 8 months ago came up with a plan to transform the building, donated to the city, into an Arts and Innovation Center. Warren says it'll have something for everyone.

"When people think of art, they think of paint brushes, they think of sculptures that type of art. But we're talking art in all different varieties," Warren said.

That means an extended art gallery, equipment for budding young filmmakers, and culinary arts lab.

"All of this project is about the community having more places to engage in their gifts. The Tyler art scene has been strong and growing," Barbara Bass, Mayor of Tyler, said.

When it comes to raising money for this project, it's going to look very similar to what the city did back in 2011 to open up Liberty Hall. It's about the passion from people in the city.

"The project will be something that the community has to want to make it happen," Bass said.

The project's first and main phase is budgeted at 3.8 million dollars. Only the first 4 floors of Lindsey building are being renovated.

"There's 4 floors above that can still be used for other arts endeavors or it could be used for technology or innovation," Mike Butler, with Butler Architectural Group, said.

An empty canvas waiting to be painted as soon as funds arrive.

You can donate by calling city hall or go to Tylerartscenter.com.
