Teen mom accused of abandoning baby in dumpster says she thought child was dead

Posted: Updated:

HOUSTON (KHOU) – The 16-year old girl accused of abandoning her newborn son in a southeast Houston dumpsterTuesday told investigators that she thought the baby was dead.

During Wednesday's testimony, the teenager also told Child Protective Services officials that she didn't know she was pregnant. She said she gave birth in the bathtub and cut the umbilical cord herself. She explained that she knew she was gaining weight, but didn't think anything of it. After giving birth, she told police she thought the baby was dead so she threw the child away in a white trash bag.

CPS officials will be reaching out to three family members and the infant's 22-year-old father. The teenager said she hasn't spoken to the man in six months, officials said.

A vigilant maintenance worker found the hours-old infant Tuesday morning inside a dumpster at the Windmill Lakes Apartments located in the 9900 block of Windmill Lakes Boulevard, Houston police said.

Carlos Mitchell was throwing trash away at the dumpster at about 8:30 a.m. when he heard something unusual.

"He heard something, like something screaming and he thought it was a cat. So he was stepping away from the dumpster again and there was screaming again, and like harder," said Ricky Ramirez, another maintenance worker.

Mitchell dug deeper and found a white trash bag, then opened it and found the baby.

The workers said the baby was a little purple and was having a hard time breathing.

"He didn't have anything on him, I wrapped him up, we called 911, but in the meantime, before they got here, we put him in the car with the heat on to comfort him and he started to recuperate and started regaining color," Mitchell said.

Police said the infant was in stable condition Tuesday afternoon at Memorial Hermann Southeast. Doctors said the infant was only about four or five hours old.

Houston Police Department investigators were able to track down the baby's mother and said the 16-year-old admitted placing the child in the dumpster. The teenager was taken to Memorial Hermann in Pearland.

Police said the girl is a student at South Houston High School. Witnesses said school papers with her name on them were stuffed in the same trash bag as the baby.
