Before you know it, fall will be here and it will be time to go back to school.  For parents that means stocking up on notebooks, number two pencils, and back to school clothes, all of which usually take a big chunk out of a family's budget.  So, just how much do parents will pay to send their kids off to school this year?More >>

TYLER (KYTX) - Tyler ISD's collaboration with NET-Health to nurture healthier children hasn't gone un-noticed.  TISD recently accepted two statewide awards for implementing the Fit City 5210 program in its schools.

Fit city 5210 really is hitting home with students. So much so, kids are bringing the concepts of the obesity prevention program to their parents.  It may have started out as a catchy little chant to remember to eat their veggies, not watch so much TV get moving and cut out sugary drinks, but it's turning into a way of life for some families.

Students at Ramey Elementary are jumping rope for heart this six weeks and learning why that's good for them.

"Like you could do cartwheels or run around and jog. You could also run to get your energy up," Julyici Gonzalez added.

"They have their 3 days of P.E., 45 minutes, 3 days a week.  Some classes have recess. We talk to them about you are not going to get it all at school. When you go home, find something to do whether it is jump rope, basketball," says Tracy Berg, P.E. Teacher at Ramey Elementary.

P.E. teacher, Tracy Berg's 5210 message to get one hour of exercise a day has made it beyond 9 year old Julyici Gonzalez to her mom, Arcenia Renteria.

When asked about Julyici coming home with healthy ideas, Arcenia says, "I was surprised."

Daily exercise after school wasn't always a routine for Julyici and her family.  "They would usually just come home and watch TV, cartoons," says Arcenia.

Julyici wanted her family to feel as good as she does in gym class.  It's working.

"She goes in the park and rides her bike. I go usually for a jog while the other kids are playing around," says Arcenia.

All of these healthy changes TISD students and parents are making aren't just fueling the students' bodies.  "There's all kinds of research about your brain and how important movement is for your brain to work," says Tracy Berg.

Better health, better grades. Fit City 5210 is partnership many parents are more than willing to support.  Julyici and her mom are also changing what they eat.  Julyici is asking for more fruits and veggies, so that's what her mom is buying now and they're turning to water instead of grabbing one of these sugar-filled soft drinks.
