Southside Park to be community build

Posted: Updated:

Tyler (KYTX) -- We're learning more about what you can expect when a newly remodeled park in Tyler is finished. The city's first all-inclusive playground is at Southside Park.

"For them to be able to play alongside with their typically-developing friends is amazing, just amazing," Denise Carter said. Carter is the mom of Matthew, who has Down Syndrome and Autism.

"He's just the joy of my life," Carter said.

Carter knows firsthand the challenges playgrounds present to people with special needs.

"They aren't wheelchair accessible. And even my kid struggles, he's got low muscle tone," Carter said.

She plans to checkout Southside Park once its finished. The new playground will be equipped with a ramping system.

"100 percent of the playground is fully-accessible to children of all abilities, to parents if they want to go up to the top slides to help their kids go down the slide," Bill Short, with company Child's Play, said.

Child's Play is helping with the design and build. It's done similar playgrounds in Oklahoma and Kansas. And this summer in June, your family can get involved.

"They are going to be doing a full day of construction, so all the community can participate in the project," Stephanie Rollings, Director of Parks and Recreation in Tyler, said.

We will bring you more information as it gets closer to the date on details of that community build. It's tentatively set for Saturday, June 21st.
