FRESH 15 inaugural Run includes nearly 3K participants

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - Nearly 3,000 runners showed up for the inaugural Fresh 15 Run sponsored by the Brookshires Corporation. The run is an extension of a health and wellness initiative -- the fit city coalition.

CBS 19's Katiera Winfrey and explains how the whole thing came together.

The energy was high aand the crowd was huge:a great turnout for the Brookshires Company inaugural Fresh 15k, 5k and 1k fun run.

People of all ages hit the course, running through south Tyler's streets.

"It was really tough out there, more challenging than I anticipated."

Veteran runner, Enoch Nadler was one of over  2,800 participants at this years run.

"Honestly it's exceeded any expectations I've had," he said.

He was the first to cross 15k finish line... Successfully completing 9 miles in under 50 minutes winning $1,500.

But this event was more than just who can run the fastest. One hundred percent goes to charity.

The money raised through registration will be equally divided and donated to two separate charities. The east Texas charity is the Bethesda Health Clinic -- which provides medical help to the working uninsured --- and the other half will go to the national chapter of the American Heart Association.

"We're excited to do something fun and give back."

Megan Riaz is the public relations coordinator for the Brookshires Company. She says, since this was the first run, they didn't know what to expect as far as turnout.

"We were hoping for maybe a thousand or 1500 runners," she said.

The actual number far exceeded that. When it comes to the runners, they hope this isn't a one time event.
