(KYTX) -

UPDATE: Traffic on I-20 is still slow going in places. The Texas Department of Transportation says the work is tedious, and TxDot has dedicated a majority of their trucks and crew to I-20 in Smith and Van Zandt counties. Gregg county is clear at this time.

(KYTX) - Hundreds, if not thousands, of drivers were stranded on I-20 between Gregg and Van Zandt Counties Sunday night and Monday morning.

Other roads throughout Smith and Van Zandt County were causing problems for drivers as well.

A combination of 18-wheelers that skidded off the road, other wrecks and cars that ran out of gas combined into a perfect storm of problems that ground things to a complete halt.

State troopers and an army of local first responders spent all night rescuing families with children from along the highway as temperatures dipped into the teens. Even the emergency workers themselves frequently reported being unable to get to the locations they intended due to extreme amounts of traffic.

Bill Daniel was driving back to Fort Worth from Mississippi Sunday when he hit the traffic wall. Stranded near Lindale, he said he had moved less than half a mile between 10:30 Sunday night and 4:30 Monday morning.

"The roads are very slick. Very dicey," he said. "Obviously it's cold and rather uncomfortable. People are starting to get frustrated but there's nothing you can do. There's nowhere to go. You know, there's just nothing you can do. It's just a parking lot. There's no out."

Daniel reported that he was still gridlocked as of 6:30 Monday morning.

Scanner traffic around that time indicated that road crews were hoping to get traffic moving within another hour.
