Tyler ISD celebrates National School Breakfast Week

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) – Tyler ISD is joining school districts across the nation this week in celebrating the School Nutrition Association's National School Breakfast Week.

Throughout the week, campuses will promote the importance of taking time each morning to eat a healthy breakfast through campus activities and morning announcements.

"It is important that children receive the nutrition they need in the morning to do their best every day," Superintendent Gary Mooring said. "This is why Tyler ISD provides each student the opportunity to have a nutritious breakfast at no cost. Utilizing this service gives parents an easy option for making sure their children are full, focused and ready for the day."

Research shows that eating a good breakfast improves grades, test scores, and attendance and that eating right at an early age helps develop a healthy brain and ensure success in school.

During the month of February, Tyler ISD served 101,141 breakfasts to students across all grade levels. Furthermore, since the school year began in August, students have consumed a total of 858,094 cartons of milk in the mornings, which contains important, essential nutrients such as calcium, riboflavin, phosphorus, vitamin D and protein.

"Tyler ISD Food Services understands how important it is for our students to fuel themselves with good food to prepare them for the activities of the day," Jennie Hammerbacher, Tyler ISD dietician, said. "Starting them out with whole grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy options and lean proteins helps to teach students that eating breakfast is a smart way to start the day."
