Tyler students honored at White House film festival

TYLER (KYTX) - The White House honoring East Texas students.

Students from across the country put together videos that were judged at a film festival at the White House last week.

The East Texas teens were recognized for their original take on how technology helps them in the classroom.

Erica Thomas is a smart, vibrant 8th grade student.

"I can't see small print very well, I can't see the board. And I have to watch where I'm going because I'll run into trees, I've done it quite often," says Thomas.

Erica has coloboma, cataracts and a stagmus.

She was part of a team that made a video about how technology helps in the classroom.

"A computer program that allows the person to magnify the words on the screen to see the screen better," says Thomas.

Erica uses Magic , a program that enlarges all the font on a computer screen.

"They showcased how they probably couldn't be as successful in the general education without this type of technology," says Charlotte Tompkins.

Tompkins is a teacher for the visually impaired in Tyler ISD.

A few months ago, she got the students working together to create this video, with only a week until it was due for viewing at the White House.

Their video was named honorable mention among 2,500 entries.

"We have a little help, but we still don't let that stop us from doing anything like any other kid," says Thomas.

A unique take on technology and learning, one that Erica hopes will teach others in the process.

The judging team selected 16 videos.

The president spoke at the film festival Friday, it was the first of its kind.
