Lufkin Death Investigation

Posted: Updated:

Lufkin Police Department (KYTX)- At approximately 9:00 PM, Thursday, March 06, 2014, Lufkin Police Department (LPD) officers and Lufkin Fire Department (LFD) personnel responded to 3507 North John Redditt Drive, apartment 141, following a report that a child was not breathing and had hanged himself.

Upon arrival, LPD Officer Eric Bauer and LFD personnel made contact in a bedroom of the residence with the child's mother, Robbie Houston. Mrs. Houston was receiving CPR instructions by telephone and was attempting to revive her thirteen-year-old son, Ryan Houston. Officer Bauer noted that Ryan was lying on his back on the floor of the bedroom, with his head and shoulders inside a closet. LFD personnel took over the performance of life-saving measures.

Mrs. Houston stated to Officer Bauer that at approximately 8:50 PM that date, Ryan, after finishing dinner and arguing with her about wanting to stay up past his bedtime, went to his bedroom to prepare for bed. Mrs. Houston said that she went to Ryan's room just before 9:00 and found him sitting on the floor. She said his legs were straight out in front of him, he was leaned forward, and had a belt around his neck. She saw that the belt was connected to the clothes rod in the closet. Mrs. Houston stated that she freed Ryan by breaking the clothes rod, called for emergency medical assistance, and began performing life-saving measures.

LFD personnel transported Ryan to Woodland Heights Medical Center where, at 9:50 PM, the attending physician pronounced his death. Angelina County Justice of the Peace Billy Ball ordered an autopsy performed to determine the cause of death.

The incident is under investigation by LPD's Investigations Division but the preliminary investigation found no signs of foul play. The investigation is open and active, and investigators are awaiting the results of the autopsy.
