Lake levels highest in years

Posted: Updated:

Tyler (KYTX) -- It's a welcome sight ahead of the summer, our lakes rising to levels not seen in years.

"It was dirt here you couldn't get your boat out," Carolyn Baer, who has lived on Lake Tyler 20 years, said.

Baer and her husband decided to retire on Lake Tyler. But some of the things they've always enjoyed with family haven't been possible lately.

"My grandchildren usually fish for the little tiny fish along here and of course, there were no fish to catch," Baer said.

But that will be different when they visit her on Easter, since lake levels have returned to where they need to be.

"It really feels as if we're living on the lake again," Baer said.

While Lake Tyler is almost full, Lake Palestine is slightly overfull. They are the City of Tyler's two main water sources.

"It's important we know where they are at so that we can plan and address situation before they arise instead of after," Greg Morgan, Managing Director of Tyler Public Works and Utilities, said.

City leaders say the rains, coupled with water not evaporating as quickly because it's been a cold winter, helped levels rise.
