New childcare center laying foundation for success

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - A new learning based childcare center is open in Tyler. It's called Great Foundations. It's a nonprofit program that's anything but your average daycare. The center specializes in helping children who have been turned away from other facilities for learning issues, behavioral problems and more.

The mission is to educate every child in whatever learning style they need to achieve success. This way, no child is turned away.

At Great Foundations, it's not unusual to see a cat in the classroom, or children playing dress-up, or maybe playing with cards...

"When I bring this one out, I can take his out in one shot- in almost one shot."

That's because executive director Heather Wilson says movement and sensory based learning are at the core of instruction here.

"We take all children at our center. We specialize in working with those who struggle with behavior."

Children like four-year-old Mark Shelton, who was turned away from another center because of his temper.

"They help me do lots of things." he says.

Now, he says his teachers have helped him make friends.

"They're great."

At Great Foundations, there is no time-out. Children are taught to self-regulate by going to what's called the "calm down corner" when they feel angry.

"I love this place." says five-year-old Carson Gore.

He says he's a much happier, calmer kid at Great Foundations. And, he's learning a lot.

"I play toys and a farm. And, read books, yeah."

Another difference at this childcare center is the aromatherapy and dim lighting. Wilson says the common fluorescent lighting in classrooms is over-stimulating for children and prevents them from concentrating.

"We don't want that. We want our children to get into public school and be successful."

She says her program works, and she's seen its benefits in action.

"It's quite rewarding, actually."

Her goal is to make sure all of her students are given the tools they need to be able to graduate to a traditional classroom one day.

The grand opening of Great Foundations is this Thursday.
