Tyler man indicted on Capital Murder charge

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - A Smith County Grand Jury has indicted a Tyler man on a Capital Murder charge for the  stabbing death of a 65-year-old man who suffered from mental disabilities.

25-year-old John Grimes is accused of stabbing to death Tony Jeter who was found dead in his home November 30, 2013.

The victim was born with mental disabilities, as a result, his brother says he was often too trusting and too willing to help any one.

"They took Tony's money, eat his food lived off him," Sanchez said.

The man police say is allegedly responsible for his death is Grimes. Sanchez believes Grimes and his brother were acquaintances.

"While in commission of the burglary he committed the homicide, so that makes it capital murder," said Tyler Police public information officer Don Martin.

Grimes is being held in the Smith County Jail on a $1,000,000 bond.

Grimes is scheduled to appear in court March 14, 2013 on a revocation of probation hearing stemming from a July 2012 charge of assault causing bodily injury to a family member.
