ETX leukemia survivor's family to receive new home

Posted: Updated:

FRANKSTON (KYTX) - An East Texas girl battling leukemia will soon have a more cheery place to live, thanks to a Fort Worth nonprofit called Sunshine Spaces.

The group gives terminally ill children dream room makeovers.  But, four-year-old Becca Reagan and her family are getting something even better.

The group was so touched by her story of struggle and survival that they actually decided to give her family a whole new house! Now, she won't have to share a room with her sister. And, her mother says they're going to have much more room to be a family

"When Becca was three, and that's when I was four."

Energetic sisters Becca and Emilie Reagan couldn't be more different from each other.

"Becca plays with alligators and I play with baby dolls." says Emilie.

But, their bond through Becca's health struggle has kept their sisterly love strong.

"I'm getting chemo." says Becca.

Becca's mother, Vicky Lusk, says she started noticing Becca bruising very easily two years ago.
Doctors told her this was typical of a two year old- until one morning.

"She wakes up and blood just dried up all down her chin, all down her chest. So, I run her back to the E.R."

After some blood work, doctors gave Vicky the devastating news.

"Came back and told us she had cancer. And, of course, you're all upset. You don't know what to do."

Becca went straight to Children's Medical Center in Dallas, where she's been getting treatment regularly ever since.

"Honestly, I thought- I thought she was going to die. I really did because it was so bad."

But, Vicky says her baby girl is a miracle.

"She's got all her hair back, but she was a beautiful bald-headed baby."

The Fort Worth nonprofit Sunshine Spaces recently surprised the family with a big gift. They're getting a new home where Becca and Emilie can have their very own rooms.

"Do you want a tickle?"

"What kind of room do you want?"

"A tickle!"

"No, not a tickle. What kind of room do you want?"

Vicky says she couldn't be more grateful.

"Oh, I mean, it's- it's no words. I feel like God did all this. God's been with me through the very beginning."

"Melissa, look at this one."

Vicky says the new home is expected to be completed by Mother's Day in May. They can't wait to move in and start a newer, healthier chapter in their lives.

Becca's leukemia is in remission right now.

Sunshine Spaces is  hosting a color fun run 5K for Becca in Tyler this may to help pay off the new home and any other expenses.

Sunshine Spaces is looking for sponsors for this event.
