Web Exclusive: TX Girl Scouts turned crime fighters

Posted: Updated:

KATY (CNN) - The Girl Scout motto is "be prepared." A troop in Texas certainly lived up to that. They were outside of a grocery store selling their cookies when they helped catch a thief.

"We caught a bad guy."

These Girl Scouts and their dedicated moms are committed to cookie sales. And now, a little crime fighting.

The troop set up a booth to sell their treats at a Katy HEB grocery store when they say they noticed a suspicious man wheeling a cart out the doors.

"He was stealing a lot of stuff."

With every item just loose in the cart, not inside any HEB plastic or paper bags, the troop kept the man in their sights.

"He had just pushed his cart back into the corner just kind of like he was hiding from us."

They say the suspect then pushed the cart across the parking lot to his car.

Mom, Mary Matthews, says by then they were convinced the man was stealing. So, they told an HEB employee.

Store director, Denise Villarreal, says the troop was right. She says the man actually had an accomplice, and together they were caught stealing about $2,000 worth of goods.

"Wine, high end appliances. A lot of stuff. Not only just groceries, but a lot of high-end merchandise."

police arrested the men...

And, the troop got a surprising thank you from HEB. Employees bought box after box of Girl Scout cookies.

"I was excited that she bought $100 worth of cookies."

"That was a really big boosts for the girls."

A troop photo hangs in the store- a sign of the connection they now share.

"We're just really thankful that somebody was here and honest enough to tell somebody that could actually do something about it."
