Tobacco Free Kids Day in Texas

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) -Today is Tobacco Free Kids Day across Texas. It's an annual day to encourage all children to live a tobacco-free lifestyle.

Tyler ISD is taking action today and spreading the word to students about the dangers of tobacco.

Rat poison.. Ammonia... Nail polish remover... You probably wouldn't consider putting any of these chemicals in your mouth..

"It's like, nasty."

But, that's what you're breathing in when you smoke cigarettes.

Stewart Middle School student Madison Johnson says, "No thanks."

"Because, it's not good for you and it can kill you and kill your insides. And, you just want to stay healthy, so you can live a good life."

She's involved in Campus Crimestoppers, an organization that allows her fellow students to anonymously report any issues going on at school.

"Gets the kids to tell us and we can report it. And then, we know what's going on."

Tyler ISD police officer Tamishea Shewmake says more children are smoking than you might think.

"Probably one of the biggest calls that we get is on minors in possession of tobacco."

That's why she says raising awareness on this day is so important.

"Because most of the time, when they start smoking tobacco is in middle school, and sometimes in the higher elementary grades. And then, of course, it's such a habit. Anyone who smokes can tell you it's a very hard habit to kick."

It's also deadly. Officer Shewmake says at least 66 people die everyday in Texas from tobacco.

"It kind of hits close to home when you mention your home state of course. We just want to get the word out there to the kids not to start smoking. And then, maybe for some of the adults who are smoking casually to see the dangers of it."

She says being a good role model for your children and setting a positive example can help them succeed in their lives.

Robert E. Lee, John Tyler, Dogan, and Stewart are the Tyler ISD campuses participating in tobacco free kids day

Longview ISD says it is not participating. Its student handbook shows tobacco products on campuses are not allowed.
