We live in the South, so some of us may have a Southern accent, but would you consider saying "goodbye" to "howdy, y'all"?
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee was going to offer a speech class for its workers next month to do just that, until it got canceled.

JACKSONVILLE (KYTX) - It's a first in East Texas, as far as gun training goes.

Jacksonville College has become the only school in East Texas to offer Concealed Handgun License and Private Security Training Classes.

The classes are not just open to students and staff, but to the public as well.

When Michael Morse became Jacksonville College's Chief Security Officer two years ago, he set a goal to promote safety at the school, but also throughout the entire community.

That's why in January, he went to Austin and became state certified to teach classes for concealed handgun licenses and private security training. The classes cover a lot of ground.

"Defense of yourself and third persons, deadly conduct, gun safety is a big one, and how to shoot," Morse says.

The courses are set up in two separate parts. The first is four to six hours in a classroom at Jacksonville College, and the second is at the Jacksonville Police Department's shooting range.

The classes started in early February and nine Jacksonville college staff members have already taken the CHL training course.

The college's board and president have already approved specifically chosen staff members to bring weapons on campus, once they complete a lot of additional training.

Morse says after all the school shootings in the last few years, the safety of his college is always on his mind.

"The day I stop worrying about that is the day they need to replace me because I don't want it to happen of course but we want to be prepared," he says.

He says with these new classes, his college and community will be more prepared than ever.

If you're interested in taking either of these classes, contact Michael Morse at his office at 903-589-7114, or through the main campus number at, 903-586-2518.
