Health Alert: Effects of salt in obese teens

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - Eating lots of salty foods seems to speed up the aging process of cells in overweight and obese teenagers. Researchers in Georgia found the protective ends on chromosomes that naturally get shorter with age, were significantly shorter among overweight and obese teens who had a high-sodium diet. Aging cells are linked to heart disease. Researchers say lowering sodium intake, may be an easier first step than losing weight for young people,  who want to lower their risk of heart disease.

(CBS) - Colonoscopies miss about 6 percent of colorectal cancers. That's according to researchers at the University of Utah. Their study found that the "missed" cancers were detected within three to five years after a patient received a clean report. Researchers say the cancers were either overlooked, or developed rapidly after patients' colonoscopies. The undetected cancers tended to appear in patients over 65, those with a family history and patients who previously had polyps.

(CBS) - A new study finds funding for medical research is at an all-time low. Researchers at Vanderbilt Medical Center say funding for kidney disease research has been particularly hard hit, compared to other illnesses. 20 million Americans suffer from chronic kidney disease.
