March Madness means big business for ETX sports bars

TYLER (KYTX) - March madness in east Texas is looking purple. In about an hour, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks will face Virginia Common Wealth University in San Diego.

SFA is one of the four Texas teams to make it to the big dance. Texas Southern University has been eliminated, however the Baylor Bears and Texas Longhorns are still in it.

While the game will bring SFA alum and supporters pride, the accomplishments of the team bring a boost to local businesses.

The excitement is hard to keep at bay. SFA is ready for the big dance.

"This is the culmination of 8 months of hard work," said the team's assistant coach as the team prepared to leave for San Diego Wednesday afternoon.

As basketball fans fill stadiums across the country for March Madness, Sports bars are also filling up.

"That's part of the fun going to a sports bar, next to being at a game that's the next best thing."

While it's  taken hard work for these teams to make it this far,  local business owners say a local team's victory is also their reward.

"As we get closer to the final game, business always gets better."

Tim Lagrand owns Coaches and Cowboys bar and grill in Tyler.

He says whether it's March Madness, the Super Bowl, the World Series or the NBA Championship, sports bars everywhere, fare well.

He says what's unique about march madness and the beginning of playoffs, business is big at the beginning, it lulls out as more and more teams are eliminated.

But things change when the Final Four prepare to hit the floor.

"As we get closer to the final game, business always gets better."

While La grand is seeing a boost in business. He's sure the SFA team will be getting an even bigger boost of support.
