Girl, 12, aims to collect 1,200 books for children

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) -  A 12-year-old girl is on a mission to collect some very important items:books. In two months Abigail Price has collected over 600 books that she will donate.

CBS 19's Katiera Winfrey explains how a summer reading a-ha moment is leading to helping other kids learn to love reading.

Stacked in the corner of the Price family dining room sits lots of books.

For Abigail Price, the going has been good. Since turning 12 in February, she's checked in over 600 books.

"I recently started loving books because I've started reading more," Abigail said.

She likes reading, but all the books aren't for her. They are for "Abigail's Bundles of Books" book drive. Now that she's 12, her goal is to collect 12-hundred new or gently used books for kids to donate to the Literacy Council of Tyler and it's project Bill's Bookshelf that aims to provide books to children.

"I really want to do a book drive, because I wasn't to give kids the experience I had," she said.

Abigail hasn't always been an avid reader. Like so many other children, a recurring question in the Price home. 'How many more books do I have to read?' However, after reading 20 books in a summer, that all changed.

"It was amazing when it finally clicked for her that she enjoyed reading," said her mother Lori Price.

Abigail's mom said, as a parent it's been great to watch Abigail's love for helping others and reading grow. So her job as a mom, is to continue to nurture those qualities.

"We drove for about four hours last weekend all over Tyler picking  up books from different garage sales, so you put the miles on so it encourages your kids to make a positive difference in their community so you just put the miles on the car and it's ok," Mrs. Price said.

Although, Abigail is half way to her goal of 1200 books, she thinking for her 13th birthday she can try for 1300 books.

If you have children's books you'd like to donate, you can drop them off at St. Paul Children's Foundation or at the Literacy Council of Tyler.
