New U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of Texas appointed

TYLER, Texas– Robert L. Hobbs of Beaumont, Texas was confirmed by the U.S. Senate and now is the 32nd individual to be presidentially appointed as the United States Marshal for the Eastern District of Texas.  Marshal Hobbs was appointed by President Obama on February 18th and officially sworn in to his new position on March 12th during his visit to the United States Marshals Service (USMS) Headquarters in Washington, DC.

Marshal Hobbs started his law enforcement career in 1977, working primarily for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office as a Criminal Investigator, but he also worked for the Jefferson County District 

Attorney's Office.  In 1996 Marshal Hobbs graduated from law school, and from 1996 to 1999 he served as an Assistant District Attorney with the Jefferson County DA's Office before joining the United States Attorney's Office in 1999.  He worked for the U.S. Attorney's Office for fifteen years and was serving as the Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division and the Attorney in Charge of the Beaumont and Lufkin Divisions when he was appointed by the President as the U.S. Marshal.

The USMS is the nation's oldest and most versatile federal law enforcement agency.  U.S. Marshals have served our county since 1789 as the enforcement arm of the federal courts.  The USMS has about 3,850 Deputy U.S. Marshals, but there are only 94 U.S. Marshals across the country, which is one for each federal judicial district. 

The duties of the USMS include protecting the federal judiciary, apprehending federal fugitives, managing and selling seized assets acquired by criminals through illegal activities, housing and transporting federal prisoners, and operating the Witness Security Program.

In East Texas the USMS has offices in Beaumont, Tyler, Marshall, Texarkana, Sherman, and Plano.  Tyler is the USMS headquarters for 

East Texas.  Marshal Hobbs will be relocating to Tyler to return to his law enforcement roots and continue his public service career as the Unites States Marshal for the Eastern District of Texas.
