Stopping domestic violence

Posted: Updated:

EAST TEXAS (KYTX) - It's a wake-up call for anyone involved in a dangerous relationship. Those with the Women's Center of East Texas encourage you to come forward and get help.

This comes after missing teen Alicia Benefield was found dead in the woods in Harrison County just last week. Her boyfriend, Rodris Webster, admitted he killed her and left her in the woods.

"Just hate that she's gone. I'm going to miss her."

Alicia's grandfather, Joe Benefield, told us last week that although he's mourning the loss of a beloved family member, he finds peace that there's a bit of closure to the case now.

"It kind of made me feel sorry. It hurt me. But I was kind of relieved. We had worked for three days looking for her."

Family and friends say she was strangled and shot before she died.

"We really do want women and men who may be in a situation like this to know that there are warning signs that a relationship can turn deadly. And, unfortunately, it was more evident in this case." says Shannon Trest, executive director of the Women's Center of East Texas.

She says those signs in a relationship include the following:
  • A partner who calls you names or puts you down
  • Makes you fearful
  • Isolates you from family and friends
  • Takes your money or tries to handle all the decisions.
Trest says many times people don't realize how dangerous a relationship is until it's too late, and that's why it's so important to recognize these signs.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families that were impacted by this violence." says Trest. "I mean, both families. It's just- it's such a tragedy."

Those with the Women's Center say domestic violence is a serious problem in our state.

114 women died in domestic violence murders in 2012 in Texas. Countless children were witnesses to these murders.
