Before you know it, fall will be here and it will be time to go back to school.  For parents that means stocking up on notebooks, number two pencils, and back to school clothes, all of which usually take a big chunk out of a family's budget.  So, just how much do parents will pay to send their kids off to school this year?More >>

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (CBS NEWS) - On Monday, one 9-year-old girl spent the day on the playground instead of her classroom. The young girl decided to change part of her appearance, in order to help another friend feel more accepted. However the reaction from her school was unexpected by many.

While the two friends are young, they are wise beyond their years. Their friendship consists of makeovers and going to the mall. There friendship also means making sure the other never feels left out.

"People would sometimes call me a boy even though I was all dressed in pink," said 12-year-old Delaney Clements.

Clements has been battling cancer for years, but never alone.

"I did it so she didn't have to feel left out," said 9-year-old Kamryn Renfro. Renfro shaved her head completely bald on Friday.

On Monday, Renfro spent the day on the playground instead of her classroom, all because she violated school policy. Her mother says she emailed school officials explaining why the 9-year-old shaved her head, but received a call saying Kamryn could not come back to school.

"Because she made a decision, a very brave decision, to shave her head in support of her friend," said Delaney's mother, Wendy Campbell.

Renfro's mother shared their story on Facebook. The reaction was almost instant, with hundreds sharing the photo.

"I was really excited that I would have somebody to support me and I wouldn't be alone with people always laughing at me," said Clements.
"I just want to say thank-you for being a really good friend and actually being brave enough to do it, and not only caring about your hair," said to her dear friend.

"Friends support each other no matter what and this is a brave girl and we should support her and the fact that she made that decision. And it is a big deal, it's a very big deal," said Campbell.

As the day unfolded on Monday, Caprock Academy emailed the Renfro family and sent out a media statement. While they reiterated their detailed dress policy, they will be holding a special session on Tuesday. They say exceptions can be made in extraordinary circumstances. They also invited Renfro back to school.

Calls to the school made by NewsChannel 5 were not immediately returned.
