Obamacare enrollment, today is the last day

Posted: Updated:

LONGVIEW (KYTX) - Monday is the deadline to enroll for health insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act -- also known as "Obamacare." Aaround 6-million Americans have already signed up since open enrollment began in October.

CBS 19's Katiera Winfrey explains what missing the deadline could mean for you.

For Americans that are for Obamacare the time is now to take advantage.

"Starting in the second week of October, I started trying to  get on the web site," said Obamacare customer Carlynn Short.

"I got a hip replacement and then I started looking for health  insurance individual but of course got denied because I had the  hip replacement," she said.

Short is one of the 6-million Americans who have already signed up for the controversial Obamacare.

"The web site got off to a rocky start and that really affected  us for a couple months," said Vik Verma.
He works to educate the public on obamacare. Despite the early on hiccups...the time to enroll is running out. The deadline is Monday.

"They should get enrolled, cause you never know what's going to happen."

If you aren't signed up, you could face penalties. The first year, a penalty of one percent of your annual income will be taken from your taxes. Each year following, the penalty will increase.

However, for some there will be an extension to the deadline.

"So that means you have to start your application before March 31st."

Those who at least start the application, will be in a virtual line as they work to complete enrollment..

Through obamacare the goal is to provide more affordable insurance rates for better health care.

"Those hospitals are expensive, you gotta have something," said Short.
