JOSHUA (CBSDFW.COM) - Makenzie Wethington returned to school on Monday morning, but she did not arrive to a lot of the fanfare that one might expect. In fact, her principal said that Wethington chose to join her classmates in the hallways of Joshua High School in a more quiet manner.

Wethington has made tremendous progress since a skydiving mishap in late January left her injured in the hospital. Click here to read all about the young girl's story.

At the time of that skydiving accident, Wethington's closest friends said that they were worried about her recovery. They designed shirts with the now-popular "Makenzie Strong" catchphrase. And it was the support and prayers of loved ones, Wethington said, that got her back to classes on Monday morning.

"Physically, I'm great," Wethington said, "but mentally, I still have memory problems and my brain is not back to the way it used to be."

Wethington's family knows that it could be a long road back to her full health. "First day, she felt like she thought she could run across the yard," said the girl's mother. "I was like, ‘Makenzie, don't do that.'"

But nothing is going to stop the high schooler from pushing herself to the limit. The accident, Wethington said, has helped the teen focus on her career ambition of becoming a trauma surgeon. "It's made me want to strive hard to do everything better for myself," Wethington said.
