Hatchet-wielding suspect ordered to Rusk Hospital

Posted: Updated:

MARSHALL (KTBS) - According to the Marshall News Messenger -- Christopher Lynn Hamilton, the suspect charged with attacking two local Wal-Mart associates and a customer with a hatchet, was ordered on Monday to be placed into the custody of Rusk State Hospital for a period of no more than 120 days.

The order, agreed upon by the district attorney's office and Hamilton's court-appointed attorney Kyle Dansby, was approved by 71st District Judge Brad Morin during a competency hearing set as a result of a psychologist's recommendation stating that Hamilton wasn't competent enough to stand trial.

Although incompetent to stand trial at this time, the order, which was signed by Judge Morin, says Hamilton will attain competency to stand trial within the foreseeable future.

"It is ordered, adjudged, and decreed that all criminal charges against defendant have not been dismissed, that there is evidence that (the) defendant is mentally incompetent, and that (the) defendant requires commitment to a mental health facility," the order states.
