Former Plano ISD Employee Embezzled Millions From District

Posted: Updated:

(CBSDFW) - A former Plano School District security manager, who was hired to keep kids safe, stole millions from the district.

Authorities say Kris Gentz, 59, lined his pockets with at least $2.5 million of taxpayer money and confirm the total losses could add up to $7 million by the time the investigation is done.

Gentz has pleaded guilty to embezzlement charges for the scheme, which took place over a nearly 10-year time period.

Authorities say as Plano ISD's Fire & Security System Manager, Gentz created two fake firms and made up invoices for work that was never completed.

East Texas U-S Attorney Malcolm Bales says, for whatever reason, Gentz was allowed to approve his own contracts.

"When you give folks authority, you need to check that authority. And that's true in every organization that I am aware of including my own," said Bales. "In this case, he was given discretion that he obviously abused. So, the idea that he could select the vendor of the contract and also approve the invoice turned out to be a bad idea."

The scheme was uncovered when a fellow district employee questioned the charges and reported the illegal activity.

Gentz has also admitted to gambling away most of the money at casinos.

Plano ISD hired Gentz in August 2000. Gentz also worked at one time as a Frisco Police Officer.
