Bond proposals on May 10 horizon in White Oak, Marshall, Nacogdoches, New Diana, Gladewater

WHITE OAK (KYTX) - In less than a month, early voting begins for several East Texas school bond referendums.

As the May 10 election nears, people in White Oak are starting to ask questions about the school district's proposed 25-plus million dollar bond package.

They tell CBS 19 they're weighing the need for more modern schools against the reality of a higher tax burden.

"You have to have money for every recommendation you're trying to satisfy," says Donna Sallee. She's walked the White Oak school hallways and knows the need, but she's not blind to people's money woes.

She's chairman of -- A Future Built on Tradition -- a group asking people to support White Oak ISD's $25.8 million bond.

Eighteen members met tonight at the community library.

On April 10 and April 13, the group is hosting tours of the high school, fieldhouse and other school buildings the bond would replace if it's passed.

"All we're doing is just being a guide," Sallee says. "We're not giving our opinion, we're just helping them look at everything."

The bond proposal would raise White Oak's tax rate more than 36 cents per 100 dollars per property value.

For a $100,000 home, that's nearly $30 a month - $356 a year.
