Children are a Gift: Kayla

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) – A girl in East Texas is facing some challenges in her young life. Sadly, it's a result of her mother drinking while she was pregnant with her. This foster child needs special attention that only a forever family can give. To get to know her, we took her on a trip to Pottery Cafe in Tyler to make something special that she could keep.

Gazing at all the ceramic items on the shelf, Kayla carefully makes her selection to paint. Picking up a decorative dish already painted she says, "I'm going to do the same thing with mine. I know how to draw a heart."

Kayla is an active, creative and outgoing 8-year-old. "She's a very bright, spirited child," said Brandi Jaco with Child Protective Services.

This little girl was diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and born with Hydrocephalus, which basically is excess fluid on the brain causing it to swell.

"But to look at your now, it doesn't look very noticeable," said Jaco. "As far as medical issues she has some stomach problems, but that's it. She's not on any medication for anything like that."

Kayla came into foster care because of severe neglect. She is now making great progress as she waits for a forever family.

"In the foster home she is in right now she has done much better in school. She is a sweet girl and does like to be around other children," explained Jaco.

Kayla likes to make new friends and is enjoying the 3rd-grade. "She is going to need a family who can fight for her with special education courses and who can advocate for her."

She's a girlie-girl who likes pretty things. "I like to dress-up and put bows in my hair and that kind of stuff and I like to sing and dance."

While Kayla deals with her past, she continues to look to her future. She's a lovable little girl, just waiting to be loved back.
