Longview ISD enters resolution agreement after Title IX inquiry

Posted: Updated:

LONGVIEW (KYTX) - About a year ago, we told you about a federal Title IX investigation at Longview ISD after a complaint filed by the high school girls soccer coach.

Coach Chris Yoder has since found a job at another school district, but his complaint might lead to some big changes for Longview High School athletics.

Last month, LISD Superintendent Dr. James Wilcox entered a resolution agreement with the federal Office of Civil Rights, in which the school agrees to survey all female student athletes -- eighth grade and older -- to determine if extra-curricular activities at the school district are fair among the sexes, and if not, how to fix it.

So in this agreement signed by the superintendent last month, Longview I.S.D.  has agreed to survey its high school and middle school female athletes by September first -- asking if they feel the sports, equipment, locker rooms and athletic spending meet their desires and are equal to boys sports.
The survey will look into try-outs, students cut from certain teams, even sports not offered at Longview, but offered at other school districts.

LISD has until January first to demonstrate it fully accommodates female student athletes' interests and abilities fairly compared to male athletes -- and it will have to file annual reports to the department of education every year through 2016.

The district released a statement, saying -- as Longview i-S-d voluntarily signed a resolution agreement with the OCR, we will most definitely comply. We don't view this as a burden, because our methods have always been intended for the good of every student."
