East Texas woman gets closer to God and better health with Daniel Fast

TYLER (KYTX) - A best selling book is turning weight loss into a spiritual experience for some East Texans, and for people around the world.  It's called the "Daniel Fast."  This biblically based "partial fast" is changing people-- body, soul and spirit.

The "Daniel Fast" is rooted in scripture.  The author, Susan Gregory, says the guidelines of the diet come from the prophet, Daniel's fasting experiences recorded in Daniel 1 and 10.  It's restrictive, which is where prayer comes in.

"The Daniel fast is not just eating a certain way.  It's getting closer to God," says Lisa Garred.        

This is Daniel Fast number 2 for Lisa Garred.  Like a lot of people on the diet, she's not just looking to lose weight, she wants to grow spiritually and as a person.

"A lot of praying and reading the word every day," says Lisa.

The author describes in her YouTube video, the purpose of the "Daniel Fast."

"Fasting is a powerful spiritual discipline designed by god meant to draw his people closer to him and study his ways and Godly practices," says Susan Gregory, author.

Lisa downloaded Susan Gregory's book to her Kindle and uses a workbook to stay on track for 40 days of fasting. Last time it was 21 days of partial fasting.

"This time is a little easier. I struggled with it last time. I don't know if each time it is going to get easier," says Lisa.     

Lisa is eating only pulse on the "Daniel Fast" -- which translates to food grown from seed.  That's basically a diet of vegetables, fruit, whole grains and water.

"You will notice that the only beverage on this diet is water to comply with scripture, that's why you can use juice or plant based milk in cereal, but the only beverage on the Daniel Fast is water. If it is a beverage it must be water to comply with this scripture," says the author.

The "Daniel Fast" sounds similar to a vegan diet, but also follows the Jewish fasting principles. That means no leavened bread. 

Also off limits-- meat, dairy, all kinds of sweeteners, caffeine, processed and deep fried foods. Man made chemicals and preservatives are also avoided on this fast.

Susan lost 5 pounds the first fast and is hoping to lose more this time around. She wants to stay healthy for her grandchildren and she is aware that heart disease runs in her family.

The author of the book says fasting is not meant to be long-term because of its intensity.  You should always talk to your doctor first before you start a new diet plan or workout.
