American Red Cross Responds to Severe Weather Outbreak Across North Texas

Posted: Updated:

Tyler (KYTX)— While many local residents were scrambling to find safety from the storms last night, American Red Cross volunteers were standing ready to assist where needed.

At 9 a.m. this morning, damage assessment crews fanned out across Collin, Hunt and Hopkins counties to get a better understanding of the types of damage and what each community might need from the Red Cross.

At 1 a.m. this morning a shelter was opened in Hunt County at the First Baptist Church at 203 W. Cockrell Street in Celeste, TX.  Volunteers provided canteen support to first responders overnight in Birthwright, Hopkins County, TX.

While it is too soon to know just how many homes have been affected by these storms, widespread power outages are reported. The Red Cross has tips to survive a power outage available at http://www.redcross.org/www-files/Documents/pdf/Preparedness/checklists/PowerOutage.pdf

You can help people affected by disasters like tornadoes, floods and other crises by making a donation to American Red Cross Disaster Relief.

  • You can donate by visiting www.redcross.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or texting the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
