NCAA Division III Week

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - Monday marks the start of NCAA Division III Week. This is an opportunity to recognize the impact of athletes at Division III schools.

For many student athletes at UT Tyler, the key word is student.

"We're here because we want to go pro in something else. We're here because we're students." says sophomore Logan Smoak.

She is studying mass communication. She's also on the volleyball team.

"You get more one on one time with your teammates and your coach. And, you get to focus on your academics. We are more like students athletes and so you really get to focus in on your classes and the benefit- you get to play. You get to do the thing you love!"

For Chapman Herwood, that's golf. And, he says that's why he chose UT Tyler.

"The golf team here won the national championship this past year. So, that definitely went into decision-making."

He says it's a decision he's never regretted.

"We're gifted as part of the golf team- I'm sure with other sports as well- to have just great facilities. And so, you can really dig deep into being an athlete and just the characteristics of grinding it out and working as hard as you can."

He says going pro in golf would be great...

"But, if that doesn't work out, my intentions are to go to law school."

For now, both students say it's just about enjoying the their sports and getting a quality education.
