TISD Superintendent Gary Mooring Resigns

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - Tyler ISD Superintendent of Schools Gary Mooring announced Wednesday that he will be resigning June 30 due to "health concerns."

"It's been one of the hardest decisions I've ever made," Mooring said. "I love Tyler ISD -- my relationship with the board and the community -- I love that.

Mooring says his struggle with diabetes lead to his decision.

"I have type 2 diabetes that a lot of people suffer from, and it's just going to be an ongoing issue I have for the rest of my life, and I have to deal with the management of that," he said.

Mooring has been Tyler ISD's superintendent since January of last year, and says he didn't expect to be forced into retirement so soon.

"I was hoping to be able to go at least another year," he said, "but just circumstances and the management process of that has accelerated that to the point to where I really felt like I needed to make that move."

Since his leadership began in 2012, Mooring has guided the district through several notable accomplishments, including the passing of a $160.5 million bond package last spring, and most recently, the formation of a comprehensive strategic plan that increases community engagement and supports 21st century learning among the students of Tyler ISD.

School board president Orenthia Mason says that while the staff is disappointed to be losing mooring, they're happy he's putting his health first.

"We were all saddened to hear the news because actually we love Mr. Mooring," Mason said. "He has been such a wonderful inspiration, not just to the school district, but to the board. But we all understand that at this time this is his decision, and we support him in whatever he chooses to do. We'd love to have him for another 10 years, but we understand."

"We've got a great board, a great school board that I hope continues to move the district forward, and I know they will," Mooring said. "I love them, and I've had a great relationship with them."

Mason has a list of qualities she'd like to see in the person eventually chosen to replace Mooring.

"Leadership, vision, ability to inspire the staff, one who can solve problems, a person who can provide a clear sense of direction and a positive direction for our school district," she said. "They will have some big shoes to fill." she said.

The Tyler ISD Board of Trustees will consider Mooring's resignation as an action item at the April 17 board meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Davidson Conference Room at the Jim Plyler Instructional Complex.
