LONGVIEW (KYTX) - Sales are up in East Texas' two largest cities, according to the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts.

In sales tax rebate figures released this morning, Tyler reported an 8.76 percent increase in its sales rebates for March - from $2.72 million in April 2013, to $2.96 million this month. This month's rebates reflect sales from March.

In Longview, sales for March were up 4 percent, resulting in a rebate check of $2.34 million, compared to $2.25 million this time last year.

State sales tax revenue in March was $2.09 billion, up 5.6 percent compared to March 2013.

"The growth in sales tax revenues was led by business spending in the oil and natural gas mining, wholesale trade and construction sectors," Combs said. "Collections from restaurants were also strong. This marks 48 consecutive months of growth in state sales tax collections."

Combs will send cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts their April local sales tax allocations totaling $554.5 million, up 6.2 percent compared to April 2013.
