Dog Finally Heals After Severe Neglect

LONGVIEW (KYTX) -  A day at the park with her 2 kids, and one that she sees as a kid. Samantha Laurent James has been caring for this dog for 3 months. Nicklaus was found by Longview Animal Control wandering Stamper Park in south Longview  and had a gash around his neck, and bites all over.

"He's a sweet dog. He's always playing with my kids, and laying in bed with them."
According to Longview Animal Control Officer Chris Kemper, Nicklaus was given a collar at a young age, and the collar was never adjusted for his growth.  The collar grew into the skin, as Nicklaus got bigger.  Laurent James says the story she saw on CBS 19 inspired her to act.
"it shows them what can happen if you mistreat an animal, and what can happen when you love him can accomplish for him.'
After 3 months of antibacterial creams, pills, and surgery a scar is all that remains.  Laurent James is a foster parent for the Humane Society of Northeast Texas. She acts as an extra kennel for the shelter, giving Nicklaus time to find a permanent home.  She says don't let the reputation of pit bulls fool you.
"It's just like a person, you have to get to know them before you judge them"
She says it'll be bitter-sweet to see Nicklaus get adopted. She'll miss him, but knows he'll make a great addition to the right family.
