East Texans pushing deadline to file taxes

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - Tuesday is Tax Day! If you haven't filed your taxes yet, you better get to it! They are due by midnight tonight.

Local tax preparers say you don't want to take the gamble of filing late. If it turns out that you owe money to the IRS, you will be faced with fines- both for failing to file on time and failing to pay on time. And, one of those penalties will continue to grow 5% each month after the deadline that you are late.

Theresa Clover from chandler is making sure she doesn't get hit with those fines. But, she admits, she's procrastinated this year.

"I know it's the last minute."

She says the tax deadline has been looming over her and she's ready to breathe a sigh of relief.

"Waiting for- to be able to have the money to file."

Tax preparer Teri Rogers says there are plenty of East Texans pushing the deadline.

"They're afraid. They really are. They don't know what the outcome is on their tax return and they are afraid that they owe money."

Clover is hoping she's not one of those people this year.

"Ever since the children left home, I've had to pay. So, I'm hoping this year I've got a little different twist to my income tax this year. So, I'm hoping that maybe it"it'll level out- come out even."

She plans on filing a little earlier next time around.

"I hope I don't wait until the last minute next year."

"Hurry up and get in and file." says Rogers.
