College students make mad dash for extra cash

Posted: Updated:

Tyler (KYTX) -- Local college students made a mad dash today to get their hands on extra green.

"The more questions they get right, the more time they get inside the booth," Fred Peters, Director of Public Affairs at Tyler Junior College, said.

To get inside the booth at TJC, you first need money smarts. A long line of students waited to put their knowledge to the test, and most walked away smiling wide.

"I won this $25 gift card, some sweets, and $3 which is really cool," Isaac Hicks, a TJC student, said.

And Hicks can tell you it's not as easy as it looks. "I wasn't doing good, and I had to make up for it. 3 green, 1 blue, and an orange," Hicks said.

Blue paper scored you a medium prize, orange a large prize, and green means cash. The activity goes along with TJC's Financial Literacy Week, to encourage students to understand personal finance.

"Just an awareness of what you have under your name is so important," Carmen Carpenter, with Texas Bank and Trust, said.

Texas Bank and Trust sponsors the program called "Good Cents." Another set of activities is planned for the fall.
