New SAT will have fewer questions, different scores

Posted: Updated:

(CNN) - Some good news for high school students -- the SAT is getting a makeover.

On Wednesday, the College Board previewed some of the changes that will be put into place in two years. For starters, there will be fewer questions on the new test. The vocabulary section will focus on relevant words instead of requiring students to memorize words they may never use in real life. The written essay will be optional and will be scored separately from reading, writing and math.

Officials at the College Board say the goal is to make the 88-year-old exam "more open and clear than any in our history."
