West reflects on explosion recovery

Posted: Updated:

(CNN) - Today marks the one year anniversary of that devastating fertilizer plant explosion in the town of west. 15 people were killed and much of the town destroyed or damaged.

Governor Rick Perry announces West will get an additional $4.8M in disaster assistance. The funding comes at the request made last week by west leaders. It will be used for work on water treatment, storage facilities and other needs. In total, the state has now given West about M in recovery aid.

Earlier this year the Federal Emergency Management Agency gave $20M to help rebuild two schools destroyed in the blast.

West's mayor talked about the possibility of a new fertilizer plant being built in west.

"It's a needed industry, somewhere in this area. Is it right here in west. I don't know. Is it zoned where people won't be around it. Hopefully. Hopefully we learned a lesson. Will it be safe? You bet," says Mayor Tommy Muska.

The town recently hired the same economic development consultants who helped in New Orleans and Galveston. That was after devastating damage from hurricanes Katrina and Ike.
