Health Alert: Foodborne Infections Public Health Problem

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - The nation gets graded on food safety and the latest report card shows foodborne infections are still an important public health problem. That report came from the center's for disease control. While salmonella food poisoning decreased nine percent last year, numbers show other foodborne infections linked to dairy products, chicken and shellfish are spiking. Infections linked to eating raw shellfish were also at the highest level since tracking started almost 20 years ago.

(CBS) - A new government report finds only about half of the 8.5M adults in the U.S. who have serious suicidal thoughts are getting professional help. The reports shows 3 out of 4 people with suicidal thoughts were not aware they needed treatment. About 35,000 deaths in the US are blamed on suicide every year.

(CBS) - Some children with chronic kidney problems may have been put at risk to develop the disease before birth. A new study at the University of Washington links maternal diabetes and maternal obesity to childhood kidney disease. Researchers found infants with low birth weight were also at risk.
