Students promote, organize "Color Fun Run" for English class

BULLARD (KYTX) - Bullard middle school eighth graders are learning some real life lessons. Since January the students have been writing press releases, creating commercials and planning a community wide color fun run.

It's been quite a colorful day for Bullard Middle School students. Judging by the the colorful powders and smiling faces as the groups nears the end of their project, it may be hard to tell these kids are doing class work.

"I thought we were gonna do some paper work, but this is a lot  better than what we usually do," said eighth grader Hood Taylor.

Since January, a couple of Mrs. Amanda Goode's English classes have been hard at work organizing a community wide Color Fun Run.

"We wanted to show them how to use English in the real world. I wanted it to be relevant, I wanted them to feel something bigger," Goode said.

The Bullard Education Foundation --which gives aid to schools who want to provide innovative learning--- presented the group a grant to take on the project.

"I think they saw that we were determined," said eight grader Faith Crist.

Tasked with making sure everything comes together, the group of students were separated into three categories.

Art:
'The most challenging was probably coming up with the posters...because you literally had no idea of what to put on  it," said eighth grader Abbie Denman.

Media (i.e.) press releases:

"You had to be really professional cause adults normally write this so there's a lot of pressure," said eight grader Nichole Jones.

and technology:

"It was a lot of fun and we put in a lot of hard work," said eighth grader Nick Costas.

From placing signs throughout the community and gathering sponsors: more than 250 participants have already signed up.

"They stepped up and they've done more than I ever expected," said Goode of her students.

The money raised from the run will go back toward the Bullard Education Foundation to be used to help other students find new innovative ways to learn.
