Local student enters "local hero" competition

Posted: Updated:

Tyler (KYTX) -- An East Texas college student is sharing her story with the nation and entering a competition for people with disabilities.

You may know her as Miss Wheelchair Texas.

Although Olivia LeVoy can get around by herself, it's becoming harder.

"My disability has progressed faster than anyone expected," LeVoy said.

She has Spinal Muscular Atrophy, and has been in a wheelchair much of her life.

"The doctors told me I would be lucky if I made it to 16 years old," LeVoy said.

Now at 21, LeVoy is thriving as a Tyler Junior College Sophomore and was crowned 2013 Miss Wheelchair Texas.

However, she's recently had to get a new wheelchair, and it doesn't fit her truck properly. Then there's the headache of getting in and out.

"When it gets really cold, the wires freeze and then become unplugged. So then they have to go in and unfreeze the wires," LeVoy said.

Her lift to get in her truck has broken down 7 times just this year. To fix the problem, she's entered a contest to win a wheelchair accessible vehicle.

"It's a contest where you get votes and if you have the most votes then you're a local hero. I'm looking at a van," LeVoy said.

Susan Harris pushed LeVoy to enter.

"She just needs something to get her around that's dependable," Harris, with Access 2 Mobility, said.

LeVoy's positive attitude, shown as she works at CBS19 as a web producer.

"Whatever my purpose may be, I'm here to find it and live it and enjoy life," LeVoy said.
