Hallsville Student Finds Used Needle on School's Playground

Posted: Updated:
HALLSVILLE (KYTX) - A situation to make any parent worry. Pamela Kelly says her 4 year old son came home from school recently with a hole in his hand. Tyler Kelly goes to Pre-K here, at the Little Cats Learning Center in Hallsville. Kelly says since coming forward with this news, she has received thanks from other parents.
"They have been extremely thankful. So they can be more proactive and more on the look out." - Pamela Kelly, Tyler's Mom
The school made this statement to CBS 19 via email. The school confirms that the student did find a used needle, and teachers found at least one more. But the school nurse did not find any signs of a stick.
The family went to the Good Shepherd E.R., and these release forms  show that Dr. Jeffrey McWilliams found an acute needle on Tyler's hand.
"There is still a lot of emotion knowing there is a chance of something major happening. We are just praying and hoping." - Kelly

Doctor McWilliams spoke exclusively with CBS 19. He couldn't go into specifics about Tyler but says if you are stuck with a used needle,
the chances of coming down with something are small.  There is a .3 % chance of getting HIV, and the greatest threat is with Hepatitis. There is a 6% chance.
"Wash the area with hot water and soap. Immediately get to the hospital." -Jeffrey McWilliams, E.R. Physician
He says if a needle is found, no one should touch it and to have the area blocked off. Call Police and have Police pick it up.
"Relatively low risk here, but there is still a risk:" - McWilliams
"We don't mention it much at home, because we don't want him to worry." - Kelly
Tyler will have blood work done every 6 weeks for the next 6 months.
