Children are a Gift: Selena

(KYTX) –  Selena is a cheerful young lady with an infectious smile and a genuine spirit. “She's very happy and she can make you happy," said Ted Baxley.

Baxley is one of the nurses who helps take care of Selena in her foster home.

"I  enjoy working with Selena very much.  It has totally been a blessing for me to be able to work with her."

Selena has Cerebral Palsy, which causes her to have poor motor control.  Despite that, she tackles her challenges with grace.

“Her personality is upbeat. She can get down at times and it may be that we can't understand her level of pain."

She has a determination to make the most out of each day and bring joy to others.  "She has a very good sense of humor," said Baxley. "And she enjoys being teased and teasing [others.]"

Although she is non-verbal, Baxley says make no mistake, Selena is still able to communicate.  "If it's a definite no, then she's going to throw that head side ways and let you know it's a definite no. If it's a definite yes, she's going to smile and push her head down with a big smile, because she has a beautiful smile."

And she understands what's happening around her. "When it comes to real world issues, like boys and family issues, I think she knows a whole lot more than what we give her credit for," said Baxley with a smile.

This 11-year-old likes attention and school is one of her weekly highlights. "She does like school. She is able to get on the school bus with the bus having a lift. She enjoys her instructors and she is very eager and is determined to do things that are not available in your home like i pads and just different experiences."

And she is learning to talk. "If you are around Selena then you can understand when she says 'I do' and 'I know' and sometimes it comes out pretty clear."

Selena would benefit from a family environment with parents who can devote a lot of attention to her. Some medical experience with children with disabilities would be helpful, but not necessary.  "A family could be trained and taught how to take care of Selena."

She has a sweet face and a kind heart, and a desire for a chance to have a life filled with love.
