Palestine PD arrested Three on Drug Charges

Updated:

PALESTINE (KYTX)- The Palestine Police Department SWAT unit and the Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) arrested three people at a residence located at 1111 N. Fort St. The residence was located in the mobile home park on Fort St, Lot #9.

“The arrest came after a month long investigation by the DEU into the sale of illegal narcotics from this residence”, reported Lt. James Muniz, Division Commander.

Chief of Police Robert Herbert added, “I’m very proud of our tactical team, getting in and securing the scene. Again, I’m proud that we got drugs off the street, and we will continue our efforts to rid drugs from our community.”

After securing a search warrant, officers served the warrant by using the SWAT team to secure the scene. Five people were detained at the time of entry, including one who attempted to flee from the residence. Two of the subjects were later released without charges.

Police seized approximately one pound of methamphetamine, approximately ¼ pound of crack cocaine, as well as marijuana and other narcotic type pills. In addition to the narcotics, approximately $1800 cash was seized in connection with the investigation. Regarding the amount of the seizure, Chief Herbert commented, “This large of a seizure, unfortunately, is a direct result of how much dope we have within our community.”

The three arrested were charged with Manufacturing and Delivery of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1>400G. This offense is punishable by imprisonment in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for life or a term of not more than 99 years or less than 15 years and a fine not to exceed $250,000.

Those arrested were 44 year old Willie Leon Barnes of Palestine and 36 year old Donald Drew Nixon of Palestine. Also arrested was 46 year old Mattie McDonald. McDonald was charged with a single count of Possession of a Controlled Substance PG1 less than 1 gram. McDonald was released on a $7500 bond. Barnes and Nixon are being held in the Anderson County Jail on bonds totaling just over one million dollars.

The Palestine Police Department was assisted in this operation by members of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice K-9 Units from the Anderson County area.
